The Ayam Cemani is a rare and striking breed of chicken known for its completely black appearance, including its feathers, skin, muscles, organs, and even bones. This extraordinary pigmentation is the result of fibromelanosis, a rare genetic condition that causes hyperpigmentation, giving the bird nearly ten times the melanin of typical chicken breeds.
Native to Indonesia, the Ayam Cemani is highly valued not only for its unique aesthetic but also for its cultural and spiritual significance. Many locals regard it as a symbol of mysticism, good fortune, and prosperity, often keeping it as a prized pet or using it in traditional ceremonies.
The name Cemani (pronounced se-MA-ni) originates from Sanskrit an ancient language, meaning “jet black.” The Ayam Cemani has gained global fascination among poultry enthusiasts, collectors, and breeders due to its rarity, distinctive beauty and the folklore surrounding it.
